The Last Imperial Easter Egg, Fabergé

The Easter egg on display here stands out among the Imperial Easter eggs created by the House of Fabergé, which epitomized Russian fine jewelry and the art of hardstone carving. This piece is widely recognised today as the Tsesarevich Constellation Egg.

The cobalt glass egg, composed of two light blue halves, is supported by a cloud-shaped rock crystal pedestal. The top is a perfect hemispherical dome, featuring an engraving of the starry sky. Tiny rose-cut diamonds glisten from delicate indentations scattered across the surface.

This Easter egg remains an unfinished work. In his letter to Eugène Fabergé in 1922, Franz P.Birbaum, who was the firm's chief artist, recalled: '...if you remember, the blue glass egg was encrusted with the constellation of the day when the heir was born. The Easter egg was held aloft by silver cupids and clouds of matte rock crystal. Unless I am mistaken, there was a clock with a rotating dial inside...'

The exhibit became part of the Mineralogical Museum's collection in 1925, when Agathon Fabergé donated a number of the firm's creations to A.E.Fersman before leaving Russia.

Detailed analysis of the 'starry sky' on the Easter egg revealed that the art of hardstone carving was blended with precise scientific calculations. Alongside the brightest stars in the northern constellations, the surface also features larger indentations. Calculations of celestial positions confirmed that the blue hemisphere captured the alignment of the stars, Sun, Moon, and planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Neptune) above the horizon when Tsesarevich Alexei was born (1:14 p.m., August 12, 1904, New Style).

Birbaum's phrase '...the constellation of the day when the heir was born' describes how the Sun moved into Leo along the zodiac at the exact time of Alexei's birth.

Knowing the positions of celestial bodies at the time of birth is essential in astrology — a mystical teaching that relates the movement of stars and planets to human destiny. Mysticism and magical practices were in high fashion at the turn of the 20th century, even captivating the hearts and minds of the Imperial family.

The stars and planets on the Easter egg likely symbolized the tsesarevich's 'natal chart' — a horoscope meant to define a person's character and the pivotal moments of life.

However, none of those who calculated the movement of celestial bodies and placed their images on the Easter egg could have expected the imminent end of the Russian monarchy's history in 1917 and the execution of the Imperial family, including Tsesarevich Alexei, in 1918.
